Automatic Organization

TvT is built to take a folder of videos and turn it into a library on its own: find them, make them stream, caption them, give them posters, sort them. Video Locations is where all of that is switched on, one folder at a time. This guide goes through the page in full.

1. Watch folders

The first tab lists the folders TvT watches. Each shows its name, its path, how many videos it holds, and when it was last scanned, with the five automation switches to the right.

To add one, type its path or click Browse for the folder browser: drives at the top, folders inside each, crumbs to step back up, a search box, and Use this folder. Add folder then walks through the switches for that folder and starts the first import.

2. The automation switches

Each switch has an info icon in its column header and a gear next to it when it is on. Left to right:

  • Auto-sync scans the folder and its sub-folders every few seconds and imports new MP4 and MKV files. Each new video then runs through the other switches in order. The gear names the folder and decides what happens when an original disappears: keep the video in TvT, or remove it too.
  • Auto transcode makes the streaming copy of each new video; the original is never touched. The gear picks the profile: Best quality, Balanced, or Fast.
  • Auto caption adds captions: retrieved from subtitle tracks inside the file (in the languages you list, keeping image subtitles or converting them to text with an OCR pack, with Whisper as a fallback), or generated with Whisper for everything.
  • Auto thumbnail gives each new video a poster: a frame from the video, or an AI title guess with artwork from TheMovieDB (needs an AI provider and a TheMovieDB key from AI Settings).
  • Auto organize labels each new video: with AI (the gear sets what it may assign and whether to apply at once or hold the suggestions for review), or manually, with the same labels for every video from that folder.

3. The folder menu

The menu on the right of each folder has Rescan now, Open in file manager, Move all videos to another folder, and Remove from TvT, which takes the folder out of the library and leaves the files where they are.

4. Upload videos

Upload videos sends files in from any device that can open TvT, a phone or another computer, with no folder setup on that device. Drop the files, pick the watch folder they go into or make a new one, and they run through the same switches as everything else.

5. Transcode destinations

The second tab lists the folders that hold the streaming copies. Add as many as you like, on any drive: TvT takes turns between them for each new video and skips any that is short on space. Each shows its free space, and its menu can move every copy elsewhere or remove the destination.

Good to know

  • System Activity lists every job the switches start, with retries for anything that failed.
  • The switches only apply to new videos. Videos already in the library are handled from Manage Videos, one at a time or in bulk.
  • A transcode that fails holds the later steps for that video until a retranscode succeeds.
